CRE 101 Suggests Improvement in Creative Thinking Skills

The Noel Studio Greenhouse

The Noel Studio, in collaboration with Eastern Kentucky University’s Teaching & Learning Center (TLC), launched the Minor in Applied Creative Thinking in fall 2012. The first course offered was CRE 101, the Introduction to Applied Creative Thinking, which opened at capacity enrolment.

As part of the course, students were asked to complete anonymous surveys at the beginning and end of the semester. Members of the program’s assessment team evaluated the surveys.

In addition to true/false and short-answer questions, the survey asked students to create visual representations using two figures, drawing from exercises in the Torrance Test.

Overall, the first assessment suggests that students consider themselves more creative at the conclusion of the CRE 101 course, which seems to be supported by uses and examples of creative-thinking concepts and skills taught in the course. The assessment also suggests that, as a result of the course, students demonstrate knowledge of the basic vocabulary of creative study and are able to apply the design of the creative process to academic experiences.

Perhaps what’s most important is that the initial results have also produced additional methods for refining and developing creative-thinking assessment procedures in the future.

The Noel Studio will offer a section of CRE 101 in fall 2013. For more information about the Minor in Applied Creative Thinking, visit us online
