Noel Studio Delivers Assurance of Learning Day Workshop

Noel Studio Assurance of Learning Day

EKU’s Assurance of Learning Day is designed to give faculty an opportunity to evaluate their program as a whole, discussing outcomes, strategies and curriculum with their colleagues in order to improve student learning. In support of EKU’s second annual Assurance of Learning Day, on September 27th, the Noel Studio of Academic Creativity hosted a workshop entitled “Assessing Writing and Information Literacy through Critical and Creative Thinking” in the Noel Studio’s Discovery Classroom.

Faculty members interested in undergraduate research, writing in the disciplines, critical and creative thinking as well as information literacy attended this workshop to gain an inside look into the research conducted through the Noel Studio’s collaboration with EKU’s Honors Program. Trenia Napier, Rusty Carpenter, and Kevin Jones presentedbackground information, student learning objectives, methodology, research processes and results of the research conducted. Further, the workshop discussed how the data collected was used to adapt the Honors Program thesis process in order to optimize student learning.

The workshop promoted undergraduate research by facilitating small group collaboration. Participants discussed creating action plans for similar research in areas of interest to them. Conversation included writing in the disciplines as well as potential opportunities and challenges participants may encounter in moving forward as they develop their own studies. Through sharing knowledge of the research process, results and how the Noel Studio contributes to the Honors Program, the workshop allowed faculty insight into how research can be used as a strategy to improve student learning and success.
