Noel Studio to Host 2nd Annual Creativity Week

Creativity Week October 8-12, 2012

The Noel Studio invites students and faculty to the 2nd annual Creativity Week, held October 8th through the 12th.

A 2010 survey of corporate CEOs discovered that the number-one skill they would like to see in college graduates is creative thinking.  This goal was anticipated by EKU’s QEP theme that “EKU will graduate informed critical and creative thinkers who communicate effectively.”

Creativity week offers an opportunity for students, faculty and staff of all disciplines to come out and explore their creative niche together. Activities include open mic, photography scavenger hunt, LEGO monster build, shadow art, and more. Students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to display samples of their artwork during the event and to talk about their creative ideas with others.

Creativity week will feature several faculty workshops from multiple departments including communication, aviation, psychology, engineering, and more. The workshops will highlight the use of creative thinking in a variety of outlets to encourage student collaboration and creative thinking. The workshops are available to anyone who would like to attend.

“Creativity week is an opportunity for the EKU community to explore creativity through different lenses,” said Dr. Rusty Carpenter, director of the Noel Studio and ACT minor. “It’s also intended to show how important creativity is on campus and in our academic programs.”

In light of EKU’s new minor in Applied Creative Thinking (ACT), students in the new CRE 101 Introduction to Applied Creative Thinking class will have the opportunity to participate in facilitating several activities during the week. Students will gain the knowledge and experience in how to encourage creative thinking in others and be involved in the process.

Dr. Charlie Sweet, Co-director of the Teaching & Learning Center, concludes, “The Noel Studio for Academic Creativity, the new minor in Applied Creative Thinking, and Creativity Week provide vehicles for developing what futurist Daniel Pink (2005) calls a whole new mind.”

Creativity Week will take place during normal operating hours (8:30am – 5pm), Monday – Friday from October 8th through the 12th. Students, faculty, staff, and family are welcome to attend and are encouraged to participate in new and exciting activities to promote creative thinking!
