Public Speaking Showcased at New Competition
Abbie Westerbeck’s speech on self-defense given to CMS 210 class earlier this semester was voted the best speech of the semester on Wednesday evening at the Noel Studio for Academic Creativity.
Westerbeck received the first ever Noel Studio Public Speaking Award. Her nominating instructor is Joe Martin.
Students from across the disciplines were encouraged to participate as part of the Noel Studio’s recognition of the importance of oral communication skills.
“During the semester here at Eastern Kentucky University, many instructors require oral presentations as part of the class curriculum,” said Noel Studio Director Dr. Russell Carpenter. “This competition is designed to showcase the best speeches given in these classes.”
To participate, students needed to be nominated by a professor. Speeches were limited to five minutes and topics were open.
The event was coordinated by the Noel Studio’s Communication Coordinator, Shawn Apostel. Speeches were judged by Noel Studio Coordinators Apostel, Trenia Napier, and Leslie Valley as well as Technology Assistant LeAnn Stokes.
Each speech was evaluated using the Noel Studio’s integrated approach to composition and communication: critical and creative thinking, presentation style, word choice, organization, quality of sources and in-speech citation, and integrated use of (high or low) technology.
The Noel Studio will host the competition again at the end of the spring 2012 semester. We invite potential participants to check www.studio-old.eku.edu for more information about future events.
