Third Public Speaking Competition Planned at Noel Studio
Students and faculty are invited to celebrate some of the best oral presentations of the year in the Noel Studio for Academic Creativity.
The third Noel Studio Public Speaking Award Competition will feature speeches from across the disciplines given by students in classes at Eastern Kentucky University.
The event will be held on Thursday, October 11 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Greenhouse of the Noel Studio.
“Many professors assign student speeches during the course of the semester,” said Dr. Shawn Apostel, Communication Coordinator and competition organizer. “Normally, only the students and professor hear these speeches. This competition is a place to showcase the best speeches offered in these classes.”
Speeches can be on any topic but no longer than five minutes. Students must be nominated by their professor to participate in the competition.
Each speech will be evaluated using the Noel Studio’s integrated approach to composition and communication: critical and creative thinking, presentation style, word choice, organization, quality of sources and in-speech citation, and integrated use of (high or low) technology.
Thanks to Pearson’s sponsorship, the competition will also include food, and the winner will receive a tablet computer as well as the title “best public speaker.”
Professors can nominate a student to speak at the competition using this form: http://studio-old.eku.edu/noel-studio-public-speaking-award-competition
The Noel Studio provides free consultations to students who are working on public speaking, and contestants are invited to work one-on-one with a trained consultant to prepare for the contest.
